Custom Optical Windows Manufactured to Your Specifications

optical window is a flat, optically transparent substrate designed to isolate internal components from the external environment without affecting the transmission of light. It serves as a protective interface in imaging, sensing, metrology, and high-power laser systems. Compared with ordinary glass plates, optical windows must meet stringent specifications in refractive index stability, surface flatness, parallelism, wavefront distortion, and environmental durability. They are typically engineered from optical-grade materials such as BK7, fused silica, sapphire, calcium fluoride, and advanced IR crystals, allowing them to perform reliably across UV, visible, NIR, SWIR, MWIR, and LWIR wavelengths. High-quality windows ensure minimal optical loss, excellent surface integrity, and stable performance even under harsh temperature, pressure, or humidity conditions

Star Optics provides precision optical window manufacturing tailored for demanding industrial, scientific, and defense applications. We do not treat windows as simple protective plates—they are engineered optical components manufactured to exact tolerances.

FAQS

What is an optical window?

An optical window is a flat, transparent substrate designed to protect internal components while allowing light to pass through with minimal distortion. It does not alter the beam path and is commonly used in imaging systems, sensors, lasers, analytical instruments, and harsh-environment enclosures.

The selection of window materials is usually based on factors such as spectral range (UV/VIS/NIR/MWIR/LWIR), mechanical strength, thermal stability, chemical tolerance and cost. For example, Fused Silica is suitable for UV and high-energy lasers; Sapphire is used in high-pressure, high-temperature and wear-resistant environments; Germanium and ZnSe are commonly used in infrared imaging systems. We can provide material recommendations based on specific application environments.

The coating design needs to be based on the requirements of incident wavelength, angle, power density, system transmittance, as well as application scenarios (indoor, outdoor, vacuum, aerospace, etc.). Common coatings include single-sided/double-sided AR, BBAR, IR high transmittance, reflection suppression, and high durability coatings, etc. Our company can provide customized spectral lines and test data according to your optical indicators.

We offer customization of sizes ranging from small sensor windows to large observation windows, including circular, square, rectangular, irregular, stepped and conformal structures. Our processing capabilities cover the entire process from precision cutting, CNC grinding and polishing, chemical strengthening, chamfering, blackening treatment, coating, etc.

Sure. We offer outdoor-grade wear-resistant coatings, hydrophobic/oil-repellent treatments, salt spray resistance, dust resistance, fingerprint protection, and condensation prevention on the surface, ensuring the optical windows maintain long-term stable performance in harsh industrial, marine, medical, and defense applications.
