OD6 Notch Filter Overview

OD6 notch filters are high-performance narrowband optical rejection filters engineered to precisely suppress a specific laser wavelength while maintaining high transmission outside the rejected spectral band. Compared with lower optical density designs, OD6 notch filters provide significantly stronger attenuation—≥10⁶ attenuation (OD6) at the target wavelength—making them ideal for high-power laser environments and ultra-low-noise optical detection systems.

OD6 Notch Filter Manufacturing Approach

At Star Optics, we manufacture OD6 notch filters using optical-grade substrates combined with advanced multilayer dielectric thin-film coatings. These filters are optimized for UV, visible, and near-infrared (NIR) wavelength ranges and are designed to deliver long-term spectral stability, environmental durability, and batch-to-batch repeatable performance in demanding optical systems.

Center Rejection Wavelength and Optical Density

The most critical specification of an OD6 notch filter is the center rejection wavelength, where the filter achieves its maximum blocking performance. At this wavelength, transmission is reduced to ≤10⁻⁶ (≤0.0001%), effectively eliminating laser line interference that could otherwise saturate detectors or compromise measurement accuracy.

Key Optical Characteristics of OD6 Notch Filters

A properly engineered OD6 notch filter features:

  • Ultra-high attenuation at the target wavelength (OD6 or higher)

  • Steep spectral edges for precise wavelength discrimination

  • High transmission in the adjacent passbands

  • Excellent spectral stability under varying environmental conditions

These characteristics make OD6 notch filters particularly valuable in optical systems where even minimal residual laser light is unacceptable.
